Sonora California

    Sonora was for a time the biggest, richest and roughest town in the California motherlode. The town was first settled by Mexican miners and named after the town of Sonora, Mexico. Many of the American miners resented anyone else working claims in the gold country of California and as a result, Sonora was as rough and rowdy as any town in this part of the Sierra Nevada. Although it was initially settled by Mexican miners, it's somewhat surprising to find the Spanish name "Sonora" preserved due to the violent attitude of the white Americans towards foreigners.

   As the profits from the mines began to diminish, Sonora evolved into a transportation center. As a result, the town was able to maintain a sizeable population to the current day. Today, Sonora California is a fairly large town with a good-sized downtown area. Fortunately for us, quite a few of the original structures are still in use. Sonora is without a doubt one of the great gems of the California Gold Country.
