   Discovery of the Sierra City area independent of the Native Americans was first made by a pair of prospectors in the spring of 1850. The gold rush in California had been in full swing for about two years before gold seekers got  deep enough into the gold country to find this area at the base of the northern Sierra Nevada range.

   The area of Sierra City was deserted for several years as the harsh elements this far north made passage difficult and supplies expensive. The lode mine operations throughout the gold rush country were largely responsible for the re-establishment of Sierra City on the California map. The lode mining brought more money which afforded larger shipments and better storage facilities. Lode mines also brought consistent income to those who were no longer independent miners. As a result... saloons, hotels, and brothels would inevitably follow. Initially these facilities were located at each of the mines themselves, but over time, the town of Sierra City was reborn.

   Upon entering the Sierra City area, today's visitor will immediately notice the dramatic cascading cliffs of The Sierra Buttes. As you enter the town of Sierra City CA you will be greeted by the charm of the old mining camp. The mountains are the home of countless mines, making Sierra County a gold seekers dream as one of the best areas for modern day prospecting in the Gold Country. Several of California's largest nuggets were taken out of mines in the Sierra City area, each in excess of one thousand pounds.

    Aside from prospecting near Sierra City California, the gold country adventurer also finds one of the most scenic areas in the Sierra Nevada range. There are good eating establishments and pleasant overnight accommodations in and around the town of Sierra City CA.
