  It is no surprise that much of the successful gold panning in this nation is taking place outside of the State of California. If you have information on other states or other areas of California and would like to share it with us, we will prepare this site to include it. Although the information you find here can be very helpful, you should be very careful not to pan on private land without the permission of the land owner. If it is public land, you need to make every effort to that there are no restrictions by the BLM and that no current claim exists... CLAIM JUMPING IS ILLEGAL!. All dredging operations in California require a permit and not all areas that allow hand panning will allow dredging. Areas where dredging is permitted typically will have a limit to the size of hose (ie.. 3" or 4" hose).. Permits for dredging and claim filing forms can be obtained through the Bureau of Land Management.
