Nevada City California

  Late in 1848 a few miners were working the placers at Deer Creek near what is now Nevada City. They founded a camp of tents and small cabins here because the creeks near by were showing good color. The site was first called Deer Creek Diggins as a result of the proximity to the creek that was producing well at the time. As the city grew, It was formally renamed Nevada.

 The inhabitants of the city of Nevada later found it necessary to change the name once again to avoid confusion with a neighboring state of the same name that had recently experienced tremendous success with silver mines in Virginia City. the citizens of the city of Nevada opted to change the name only slightly in an effort to maintain the notoriety that they had been establishing among other gold towns of California. The city has since been known as Nevada City, California.

    Today's prospectors continue to find rich placer deposits in nearly all creeks and rivers in the vicinity and it continues to be a favorite destination for vacation travelers as well.
