Hill California: After gold was discovered in the area of Mokelumne Hill CA in 1848, the flood of miners created one of the largest towns in California for a short time. With population topping 15,000, Mok Hill (as it is affectionately known), was named the county seat. In the 1860s Mokelumne Hill's population began to dwindle while its southern neighbor San Andreas had continued growing. San Andreas soon claimed the right to the county seat over the objections of those who would see it go to Mokelumne Hill and in 1866 the California Supreme Court agreed. At one time Mokelumne Hill was considered one of the wildest little boom towns in California. It is said that a miner was killed every week for 17 consecutive weeks with the exception of one week in which 5 miners were killed. |
