California
In 1847 General John C. Fremont directed
one of his agents to purchase land near the mission of San Jose. The agent
failed to purchase in the exact area Fremont had directed, so Fremont
subsequently owned 45,000 acres of "worthless" southern Sierra
foothills near modern day Mariposa. Gold was eventually discovered near
his land and inevitably the town of Mariposa was developed there. Fremont "stretched" the border of his parcel to include the Mariposa area and claimed it as his although it wasn't actually part of the land purchase. The Mariposa Gazette is the oldest continually published newspaper in California. The Gazette has been in circulation since it began in 1854.
