Jackson California
Jackson CA originated as a way station for travelers. Although gold was panned and mined in the area of Jackson California, it was primarily the forks of a small stream fed by a natural spring that promoted steady growth here. The fresh water in Jackson served the traveler well by providing water for livestock or pack animals and as a result Jackson was unlike many of it's contemporary gold rush towns. Jackson grew steadily as the fresh water, and gold deposits fed the needs of the evolving town. Jackson eventually evolved into an important trade and transportation center for this part of California. Rich quartz veins were discovered here in the 1850s as placer deposits dwindled. The mining continued in lode shafts until the last of the mines closed in 1942. Gold mines in and around Jackson, CA have produced in excess of 70 million dollars worth of gold and transformed the once temporary stop for weary travelers into a bustling California city center. |
