With the great success of the '66 repeating rifle which found fame in our Civil War, came a wealth of opportunity and many other types of manufactured goods. Winchester produced everything from wheelbarrows to razors and was extremely successful. The Winchester Rifle came to be known as "The gun that won the west".

About four years prior to the production of the '66 repeating rifle, Oliver's son William Winchester (who was heir to the family fortune), married a young New Haven lady named Sarah Pardee in 1862.

The happy union of the couple would tragically end with the death of William in 1881 from tuberculosis. The couple had one child, a little girl named Annie who died at only six months of age. These two points will determine the course of direction for Sarah and the house that she will continue to build for the rest of her life.
