The westward expansion across the United States created a tremendous demand for products that were sturdy, easy to use and could last a pioneer for the rest of his/her life such as the Winchester Repeating Rifle.

By 1855, Mr. Oliver Winchester had already established himself as a master carpenter and men's furnisher when he became interested in firearms. Initially he organized a company known as the "Volcanic Arms Company", which purchased rights to "the Volcanic Repeating Rifle". the company was reorganized in 1857, as the "New Haven Arms Company".

By 1866 the firearms company was firmly planted as the premier producer of the repeating rifle with the production of the "Henry Rifle", later called the '66. With this new repeating rifle came the name change to "the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.
