The Miwok Indians found abundance in the fertile valley near were the town of Groveland, CA now stands. Like many of the gold rush towns of California, it was the gold that promoted settlement of this area by those who were not Miwok. Originally named Garrotte, Groveland found its rush after gold was discovered here late in 1848 by James Savage and the town was renamed "Savage's Diggins". It would be only a year later that Savage's Diggins would be renamed to Groveland California. Groveland CA was officially founded in the year of 1849. Groveland California is just a few miles east of Highway 49 on the I-120 corridor. It is the most popular gateway to Yosemite National Park for those that are coming from the northern half of California. Groveland CA is host to the Iron Door Saloon, which is the oldest continuously operating saloon in California. |
