Grass Valley CA Travel

   Settlers came to the Grass Valley area of California in 1848 because of the good timber, grass pasture and the good water here. Placer deposits were soon discovered in the Grass Valley area and within a few years several million dollars were taken from the deposits. It was the Quartz veins however, that made the town of Grass Valley rich. The lode mining operations in Grass Valley CA alone made this town the richest of all boom towns in the state of California and the Empire Mine in particular the richest mining operations in the state.
 

    Grass Valley has grown to quite a sizable California city. It only took a few years for the town's population to swell to more than 3000. The Empire Mine was one of the most productive operations in California and subsequently made many shop owners in Grass Valley wealthy. The mine was in full operation for nearly 150 years and continued well into the 20th century. The great production of the Empire Mine and other operations in the Grass Valley area sustained the town through what were bust years for other California Gold Country towns. As a result, we can enjoy much of the old Grass Valley today.
