The interest in gold is as old as our recorded history (even longer). The earliest known records regarding the area we now know of as California, often included references to the golden riches the lands held. About 1510, Before record of the discovery of the new nation, a novel was published in Toledo, Spain written by Garci Ordonez de Montalvo. In this novel we find the following remarkable claim: "Know that on the right hand of the Indies there is an island called California, very near to the terrestrial paradise, which was peopled with black women without any men among them, because they were accustomed to live after the fashion of amazons. They were of strong and hardened bodies, of ardent courage and of great force. The island was the strongest in the world from its steep rocks and great cliffs. Their arms were all of gold, and so were the caparisons of wild beasts which they rode after having tamed them; for in all the island there is no other metal... in this island, called California..." You may discount this novel's passage as a myth, or a poor representation of what was actually found there. One thing is certain however, centuries later, thousands of emigrants would pass over desert and mountain, river and canyon just to reach California's glorious gold rush country. |

| A desert scene such as this one, may have been all that the immigrants would see for up to three days on the overland trail to the California gold rush country. | |

One of the first recorded gold discoveries in California was in 1842 by Mr. Francisco Lopez who found gold on the roots of his wild onions in the Placerita Canyon. This was at a time when California was still a Mexican territory. It would be several hundred miles north and nearly six years later that a gold find in the American River would catapult this new frontier into statehood.
