Located at the union of the two rivers Downie and North Fork Yuba, Downieville was named after it's founder Major William Downie. Major Downie had camped his small party here, originally calling the spot "The Forks". While
camped at "The Forks", Downie's party found the gravel beds
rich with placer gold and within a year the area boomed to a population
of 5000. The town was later renamed Downieville after its founder.
Today's prospector may find the area between Downieville and Sierra City in California to be some of the most productive in the CA Mother Lode. It definitely has produced its share of flakes and nuggets and continues to please the modern day panning enthusiast. |
