Hilo was named by ancient Hawaiians in honor of the first crescent a new moon and is the capital of Hawaii with a population of more than 45,000 people. Originally the sugar mills provided cargo that shipped out of Hilo and provided the primary income. It has been some time since the demand for sugar had been surpassed by tourism.
