    Within a span of about 15 years, the gold in creeks around Coulterville had been pretty much played out and the town experienced decline as did many boom and bust gold rush towns. Hard rock mining in the area of Coulterville kept it alive and unlike many other California gold towns, Coulterville survived the decline.

    The most prominent structure in Coulterville is the Hotel Jeffrey. It is still in use today as the primary hotel of Coulterville, just as it was in the rough and tumble day of the miner. Hotel Jeffrey has been a area icon since the mid 1800's. It had a humble existence in the early 1850's as a general store with a Mexican dance hall on the second floor.
