California: Santa Cruz History

About Santa Cruz California

Santa Cruz was discovered and named by the Spanish explorer Don Gaspar De Portola in 1769. Santa Cruz translated is holy cross in Spanish.

California became the focus of a surfing trend that swept the nation with songs from the Beach Boys and movies such as those that featured Elvis. Although most of the coastal towns could claim surf fame, this is where the Hawaiian Royalty first introduced surfing to the mainland.

Unique among the these coastal communities, Santa Cruz is among the best tourist friendly areas on the PCH. There's a great beach boardwalk in the area with California's last remaining seaside amusement park. You will enjoy excellent dining and reasonable hotel accommodations in the the area.

The downtown area has many quaint or unique shops, cafe's and bistros as well as various street side artists and musicians.
