San Luis Obispo History
San Luis Obispo population in excess of 45,000. 

 San Luis Obispo was founded by Father Serra of the Spanish Catholic Church as the site of the fifth California mission on September 1st in 1772. It was named in honor of Saint Luis who was the Bishop of Toulouse. This particular mission founding was extremely important due to the critical nature of the food supply of the other four existing missions. It provided fresh meat to be distributed throughout the mission chain from the nearby "Valley of the Bears".

 San Luis Obispo is on the California Central Coast midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. San Luis Obispo is far from the fast paced life of San Francisco or Los Angeles and has a comfortable, laid-back attitude. Local residents refer to this as "Life in the SLO Lane".
