Northern California

Of the six million people who make their home in the vicinity of San Francisco,
only a lucky one in eight lives in the city itself. Everyone else is spread around
the Bay Area , a hodgepodge of either very rich or very poor towns located down
the peninsula or across one of the two impressive bridges that span the chilly
waters of the exquisite natural harbor. In the East Bay are industrial Oakland
and intellectual Berkeley. To the south lies the gloating new wealth of the
Peninsula, known as "Silicon Valley" because of its multibillion-dollar computer
industry in the towns of Santa Clara, Milpitas and San Jose.
Across the Golden Gate Bridge to the north is the woody, leafy landscape
and rugged coastline of Marin County, America's richest suburb.

The modern ferries that travel across the bay from San Francisco can make a
great start to a day out. Don't neglect a visit to Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39.
Boats to the chic bayside settlement of Sausalito leave
from the Embarcadero ($5.30 each way; Golden Gate Ferry;
7.40am-8pm, half-hourly during rush hour, less often during the rest of the day,
and every two or so hours on weekends; tel 415/923-2000, ) or Pier 41 at
Fisherman's Wharf (Blue & Gold Fleet Ferries; $6.75 each way; 6-7 trips
daily; tel 415/705-8200). Biking over here makes for a beautiful ride over
the Golden Gate Bridge (pending fog) and allows you to explore the headlands
freely. Bikes are allowed on the ferry back to San Francisco.

To the east.. some of the richest gold ore deposits and placer can still be found in the area of Auburn , Placerville to Grass Valley. For a peak into the rich heritage, California Gold Rush and the Gold Country provides a wonderful weekend getaway that is aside from the normal vacation.

World class Lake Tahoe snow skiing in the winter, excellent alpine trekking or boating on a beautiful blue lake in the spring and summer. Lake Tahoe offers luxury lodging and dining, as well as great casino gaming year round. All of this contributes to Lake Tahoe being among the most popular attractions for Californian's no matter what the time of year.
