It was the 1850's and the gold rush was in full swing. After a historically brutal winter in the California Gold Country, many sought refuge in a quickly forming tent community here. Prior to the cultivation of Napa's many vineyards, there was sufficient work for the weary miner as the lumber industry produced many good paying jobs.
