| A popular retreat
for the Hollywood elite in the 1920s, many who stayed at the Hollywood
Roosevelt Hotel appear to have remained (or so the story goes).
The Roosevelt Hotel is located
across the street from Mann's Chinese Theater which is reported
to be a haunted destination in it's own right. the Hollywood Roosevelt
Hotel gained notoriety as a preferred lodging choice for movie
greats and industry executives alike. Investments from Douglas
Fairbanks and Mary Pickford no doubt aided in its popularity.
It was the site of the first Academy Awards in 1929.
In 1932 actor Harry Lee jumped
to his death from the Hotel's fire escape.
During the three month making of
"From Here to Eternity" in 1952, Hollywood great Montgomery
Clift stayed in Room 928. He could be found practiced his lines
or his bugle while pacing the floor outside his room on the ninth
floor. According to various accounts, the ghost Montgomery Clift
can still occasionally be heard playing his bugle in the ninth
story hall. The hotels guests who have stayed in the room report
being physically "touched" by something. The claims
are of a hand pat on the shoulder, back or leg. Many have reported
strange phenominon and has been well established as one of the
great haunted locations of California.
Carol Lombard's ghost has been
seen on the twelfth floor.
It is said that Bill “Bojangles”
Robinson first showed Shirley Temple their famous staircase dance
on the tiled steps leading from the Lobby to the Mezzanine level.
Rumors persist that during Prohibition,
Errol Flynn mixed his gin recipe in the back of the hotel’s barbershop.
Marilyn Monroe frequented the
Roosevelt Hotel in Cabana 246. Her four foot vanity mirror was
moved from her suite and resided for a while in the hotel managers
office. When dusting on one occasion, a maid was startled to see
Marilyn Monroe gazing back. The mirror can now be found in the
lobby. According to several accounts, her ghostly image can still
occasionally be seen in it's reflection.
There is also a report of a "cold
spot" that is approximately a foot in diameter in the middle
of the Blossom Ballroom. It is said to be haunted by two more
spirits as well.

Expect to park at the garage
on the corner of Hollywood and Highland where you will also find
the Hollywood Wax Museum and Guiness World of Records. You can
then walk one block West on Hollywood Blvd. to the Hollywood Roosevelt
Hotel, Mann's Chinese Theater and the Walk of Fame. Also within
walking distance to the parking garage is the haunted location
listed as the Musso and Frank Grill below.
