Catalina
Island California
Catalina
Island off of the coast of California,
is a favorite three day getaway when travel is from San
Francisco or Sacramento
California, although it does only leave one full day to
relax and enjoy the island. A 4-5 day itinerary would be more
suitable for someone who doesn't want to have to travel six
hours on the first and third day of a three day excursion.
Two day outings for Central California residents seems to
work well although three is recommended to accommodate the
half day travel each way. Santa Catalina Island is a year-round
destination averaging about 75 degrees in the summer and 63
degrees in the winter.
The island is owned by the Santa Catalina
Conservancy for the most part, which is a private non-profit
foundation formed to protect and restore the natural resources
of Catalina. As a result, the visitor can expect to find
the Catalina interior teeming with flora and fauna found
nowhere else in the world.
Southern
California residents can easily take the ferry across
from Long Beach and then enjoy a one day holiday on this secluded
and quaint island getaway without any additional travel. Overnight
is very desirable for the southern California guests as well.
Ferry to Catalina Island from your stay in one of the fine
Long
Beach Hotels. While in Long
Beach, be sure to visit the Queen Mary. Be forewarned!!
the Queen
Mary has a long history of Ghostly encounters and is among
the United States most haunted
places!
Most visitors opt for bicycles or golf cart rentals for
their primary mode of transportation as cars are strictly
limited here. You will find available motor coaches that
provide excellent tours. For the outdoor enthusiast, Catalina
offers camp grounds, hiking paths and scenic trails, which
can be explored by horseback. For Catalina guests who prefer
underwater adventures, there are some wonderful, protected
coves with forests of giant kelp and underwater gardens
for those that would enjoy snorkeling or SCUBA diving.
