California: San Jose Overview
El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe was founded by José Joaquin Moraga on November 29, 1777 as the first town in the Spanish colony of Nueva California (later Alta California) and was not directly associated with a mission as were earlier California settlements such as San Diego and San Juan Capistrano although some time later a mission was constructed in the area. San Jose became the first capital of California when statehood was granted in 1850 and as the state's first capital with the first and second sessions of the California Legislature, known as the Legislature of a Thousand Drinks, being held there in 1850 and 1851. San Jose had humble beginnings as the "Southern Daughter" of San Francisco for more than 150 years as it served as an agricultural center. The post World War II boom dramatically increased the demand for reasonably priced homes and the area around San Jose blossomed into state prominence. 21 California Missions along El Camino Real
