Lombard Street
The "Crookedest Street in the World"
may be only a block in length but it is quite lovely. Between Hyde and
Leavenworth streets, Lombard makes eight switchbacks along a brick pathway.
Although the view coming down is lovely but you better keep an eye on
the road. You wouldn't be the first to have lost a turn signal to the
garden borders along the edge of the narrow road. For those who prefer
to view than drive, steps follow the path of the vehicles along either
side of the road safely behind the garden wall.

Since the days of the gold rush, this has been
the heart of San Francisco commercial district. Street entertainers, statuary,
shops, dining and various other vendors welcome you. Double-decker busses
and cable cars are eager to take you from your hotel, to the Square. Union
Square was locally known as Little St. Francis after the 1906 earthquake
and fire because the residents of the nearby St. Francis Hotel sought
refuge from temporary shelters that were erected here.
