San Francisco, Alcatraz:See San Francisco CA Travel for Alcatraz Tour Tickets Alcatraz Island, also known as "The
Rock" is a 22 acre island that is one and a half miles offshore in
the San Francisco Bay. A few famous criminals interened at Alcatraz: Al (Scarface) Capone At one time this island housed a Spanish Fort and the island was called Isla de Alcatraces which is Spanish for Pelican Island. In 1850 the island was reserved by the U.S. government for military purposes, and from 1868 there was a prison for military offenders in which Indian leaders were later confined. The first lighthouse on the coast of California was erected on Alcatraz in 1854. A group of militant Indians occupied the island from 1969 -1971 in an unsuccessful attempt to gain title from the U.S. government. The island became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation area in 1972. Today more than a million visitors every year board the ferry that takes them out to Alcatraz Island and tour the prison there. |
