This County was established on February 18, 1850 just a few months before California was admitted to the Union. It was at this time, already becoming a large community and it was designated the "seat" of County government.

It is America’s second largest city after New York and sprawls along the Pacific coast of southern California. Its coastline actually stretches 122km (76 miles) from Malibu to Long Beach, while inland the city spreads out to fill a vast, flat and once arid basin ringed by the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains.
