| Summary:
In September 1771 Father Junipero Serra and a group of Spaniards founded the San Gabriel Mission as the center of the first "community".
Two years of Mexican-Anglo hostilities ensued beginning in 1846 at which time California was liberated from Mexico and functioned somewhat as an independent nation. Within a few years Control of the state had fallen to the U.S. as northern california communities began to blossom. In 1848 the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo made California a United States territory. Soon after the treaty was signed, the population explosion due to the California Gold Rush was in the Sacramento area rather than in the southern state. The County of Los Angeles was established on February 18, 1850 just a few months before California was admitted to the Union. Los Angeles was at this time already becoming a large community and it was designated the "seat" of County government. |
